Olympic Village Primary Shows Great Kindness

This morning the Olympic Village Primary grade 5/6 class made its two presentations to the organisations it chose to help through its YFV3081 grants. The class presented Austin Repatriation Hospital with the money for a wheelchair which will bear the name of the school so whoever uses it can know of the kindness of the young people at OVP.

The group whose idea is was to support the Austin feel passionate about health and looking after people when they are sick and in need of extra help and care. Not only did the school receive the $1000 from YFV3081 for their idea but they also raised the extra $250 needed to buy the new wheelchair. Amazing!

If you would like to be a philanthropist and support Austin Repat you can see what they need at their website at: Austin Hospital Support Us Section

The second presentation was to Blue Cross Animal Shelter that houses stray animals from the 3081 area. Blue Cross Animal Shelter in Wonga Park, never kills its stray animals, but keeps them until they die of old age if no-one claims them or adopts them. Most animals do get adopted. The group who supported them in their YFV3081 application feel passionate about respecting animal's rights in our community. The gift of $1000 from the class will inoculate 10 cats and 14 dogs upon arrival at the shelter.

If you would like to assist stray animals from our area contact
Blue Cross Animals Society
Phone: (03) 9722 1265
Address: 26 Homestead Road Wonga Park VIC 3115

Just imagine what else young people can do to bring out the best in 3081? Thanks for inspiring us OVP.

You can hear more about these and other inspiring stories at our Summer Awards on Wednesday December 9th 1.30-2.30pm at Olympic Leisure Centre. Bring a group along and hear some 3081 Good News!

YFV3081 Spring Season Grants Announced

There are four groups of young people who have been granted funds for their great projects this term.
St Pius X Primary School's Going Green project comes from a desire to teach younger kids to plant and eat healthy food. Going Green project is for the grade 5/6s to develop a procedure for planting vegetables, to film their procedure, to create a DVD and then teach junior primary and childcare centres their approach either face to face or through the DVD. They want to encourage young children in 3081 to create healthy futures.

Olympic Village Primary School's OVP Rolls project comes from a deep desire to be philanthropic in the area of health. The grade 5/6s are donating a wheel chair to Austin Hospital casualty for use by young people. They will raise the shortfall of $250 through fundraising at school. Their principal, Libby Young, says that this year's leadership group are deadly fundraisers! So there should be no worries about the extra cash to buy the chair.

Olympic Village Primary School's Wonga Well Being project comes from a deep devotion to animal wellbeing. The group from OVP will partner with Blue Cross Animal Shelter in Wonga Park (that's why the 'Wonga' in the project name!)to inoculate and care for 10 stray cats and 14 stray dogs. Yes! They got out the calculator and worked out the budget! They are really dedicated to animal rights and care.

Hip Hop 3081's Get Down project comes from a group of young people attending the YFV3081 Try Hip Hop classes at Olympic Leisure Centre on Wednesday afternoons.

The group are passionate about the positive affects of dancing on self-expression, confidence and fitness. Their grant continues to make the Try Hip Hop classes available for all 12-25 year olds next term starting Wednesday October 14th for eight weeks. You can just turn up. Grant Assessment ON!

The Youth Participation Action Committee - YPAC has been at the table and made their decisions on what is to be granted the funds this season.

It takes hours and lots of great vigorous conversation and debate. And food, of course! Our YPAC is Pippa, Brooke, Luis and Jess and Laura (who assessed remotely).
They had two training sessions and then discussed, scored and voted for the grants to be passed. Why was there so much laughter coming from the room? They won't say. It sounded like too much fun actually. Do you want to be on our YPAC? Contact us

Winter Grant Assessment

We received three great ideas and had to judge them. Back at Banksia Latrobe Secondary to thrash it out and make sure the applications are right and the ideas are strong enough to make a difference in 3081.

Only the young people have a vote. The grownups are from YFV3081, and the two host organisations - Banyule Community Health Centre and Banyule City Council and they/we just support and laugh at all the good jokes!

Off to school

Well, we started our YFV3081 In Community sessions. (Looking for a funky name for these sessions. Let us know if you have one.) One session a week for four weeks to understand philanthropy, community and then get to an idea. THEN we sit down together and make the application using kids' words. We laughed our heads off. Take a look at the brainstorm of what 'Philanthropy' could mean from the perspective of grade 5/6s. Jess' favourite is 'Philanthropy could be therapy for Dr Phil.'

If you would like to book the YFV3081 In Community sessions for your school/workplace/group, contact us

Money and support for your great ideas!

YFV3081 (Youth Foundations Victoria-West Heidelberg) is open. Do you want to get involved?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You can come up with ideas to bring out the best in West Heidelberg and apply for a grant of $1000 to help you do it.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO BE INVOLVED?
You must be between 12 and 25 years old. And you must live or work or play or study in 3081 West Heidelberg.

CAN YOU USE THE MONEY FOR YOURSELF?
No. This money is not for emergencies or personal use or for scholarships for study etc. It is not a prize. The money is to help pay for your project that will help West Heidelberg be a great place for young people.

HOW CAN YOU USE THE MONEY?
Your project might need materials to build something, or money to pay a trainer a fee, or you might need to pay for webspace to promote your community activity. There are other ways the money can be used. As long as you can show the YFV3081 Giving Pod that it will benefit the community.

CAN YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE A YFV GRANT BE PART OF A SCHOOL OR SPORT PROJECT?
Yes. If the idea clearly benefits the West Heidelberg community and young people's engagement with their community. We can't fund anything that a school or government service should be paying for. But we can fund something that is 'extra value' to what you are already doing if you're involved with one of those organisations.

DO YOUNG PEOPLE GET THE MONEY IN THEIR HAND?
No. We help you find someone to manage the money for you. This will be a local organisation that is not-for-profit or a registered charity. That way you can do the project well and not have too much pressure with money and bills and heavy stuff like that.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM?
The money for YFV3081 comes from East Ivanhoe Bendigo Bank and the Victorian State Government.

WHEN IS YOUR IDEA DUE?
There are four seasons in the YFV3081 year. So if you miss the date to get your application in it's not long before the next one!

Applications are due March 11, May 27, August 19, November 11.

DOES EVERY APPLICATION GET SOME MONEY?
No. We have an amount of money to invest in great projects. That's why it's important that you contact us to get all the help you can to make your idea and your application STAND OUT FROM THE REST!

CAN YOU GET HELP WITH YOUR APPLICATION?
Yes! Yes! Yes! We'll help you all the way - get your idea clear, fill out the forms with you and get right behind your great idea application to make West Heidelberg a great place for young people.

We even have information nights that have a practical workshop session to answer all your questions and go through each question on the application so you can fill it in. Too easy!

HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT MORE?
Contact facilitator Andrea Rieniets on 0428 369 612 or email her for more information. And you can become a friend on FACEBOOK - YFV3081.
